 A Mournful Melody
« Thread Started on Aug 13, 2007, 11:32pm »

Slowly, Roland awoke. He had just spent the last few hours in the Crow's Nest, sleeping off the night that he had just lost. Stretching out, he rose, sitting on the edge of the nest, then scooting out to the riggings above the deck. Swaying gently with the waves of the boat, he began to warm his voice up. Usually, his songs up here were full of merriment and happiness, or that of calm when he was feeling overwhelmed. This time, however, it was one of sadness. He was going to request to send poor Tiburon off with a song, and he had to practice it to see if he still remembered all the words. Coughing to clear his throat, Roland began the mournful tune, a traditional funeral song that he learned on the first ship he served on.

"Lay up nearer, brother, nearer,
For my limbs are growing cold,
And thy presence seemeth nearer
When thine arms around me fold.
I am dying, brother, dying,
Soon you'll miss me in your berth;
For my form will soon be lying,
'Neath the ocean's briny surf...."

Breathing to enter the second verse, Roland heard the sounds of footsteps ascending to the Crow's Nest. He continued on regardless, his tenor voice softly moving with the song's mournful tune.

"Tell my father when you see him
That in death I thought of him
Hoped that I might only meet him
In a world that's new again.
Tell my mother, God assist her
Now that she is growing old,
That her child would glad have kissed her
When his lips grew pale and cold...."

"That was quite lovely...what is it for?" Esme said as she climbed up the ladder and sat on the side of the crows nest in her head thinking Gosh, I hope I don't fall off, "Is it for anything, or just simply something to keep you entertained?" she inquired.

Roland simply smiled sadly, continuing the tune in the language of the tribunals. He ended on a delicate note, opening his eyes and addressed the girl who had climbed up the riggings.
"Ah. Esmeralda, isn't it? No, unfortunately it's not for my entertainment.... I'm practicing for the memorial service."

"Oh, for tiburon...Ronnie is what they called him I think...I never really got to meet him, sorry to bother you," Esmeralda as she got up and leaned her hip against the mast, "It must be hard for Sora, weren't they cousins?" she said in a low tone.

Roland nodded sadly. "Yeah, they are. It's a pity.... I didn't know him well, either. I regret not having time to get to know him...." Roland said. "And you're not bothering me. I just came up here because it's so quiet. Perfect for a little vocal practice." Roland swung back and forth on the riggings as he said this, the wind picking up. Looking to the horizon, he saw a black, cloud-like mass. "Ah, good, there's land. Esmeralda, toss me the periscope, please?"

"Here you go," Esme said as she tossed the periscope gently to him, "Where is it, do you know?" she asked quietly as she set her elbow on her arm and put her fist to her chin.

"Hmm.... Considering how far out we are, I'd guess that we're near Sunterland right now.... Nope, still too far off to make out.... It should become visible in about an hour, when we're closer in." Roland said, before folding it up again, tossing it lightly back to Esmeralda. "Thanks."

Roland's stomach began to grumble, and he nodded at the young woman standing in the Crow's Nest. "Well, I don't know about you, but I'm pretty famished. I'll see you around Esmeralda." With that, he slid off of the top riggings, falling down at a breakneck pace, then catching rope after rope, eventually landing with a gentle bump on the deck.

"Bye, see you later," she said as she slid down and left.
